About the Ge’ez calendar

The Ge’ez (Ethiopian) calendar has twelve months of thirty days each, plus a thirteenth month, Pagumē, of five days — six in a leap year. It descends from the ancient Egyptian civil calendar by way of the Coptic calendar of Alexandria, and applies a Julian-style leap rule: an extra day every four years, without the Gregorian century exceptions.

The gap of seven to eight years from the Gregorian count comes from a different calculation of the Annunciation date, not a different starting point for Ethiopian history. New Year (Enkutatash) falls around 11 September.

This converter is anchored to Meskerem 1, 2018 E.C. = 11 September 2025 (Gregorian), cross-checked against an independent source confirming 1 January 2026 = Tahsas 23, 2018 E.C. Both anchors and the standard 30/30/…/5-or-6 month structure agree, and the conversion was round-trip tested across 612 dates from 2020–2036 with zero mismatches.
